There is an old Beatles' song that says,

"I once had a girl /or should I say/ she once had me..." (Norwegian Wood/The Bird Has Flown, Rubber Soul, 1965).

I think of this song often in regard to our pets.

"I once had a cat, or should I say, she once had me."
